Movies

The movie industry is a multi-billion dollar behemoth that takes a lot of our money throughout the course of our lives. Movies, of course, range from lighthearted and safe (G) to mild (PG) to pushing the envelope (PG-13) to over the edge (R and above).

The question I would like to pose everyone is, in view of the dichotomous relationship between our Christian liberty and our Christian responsibility what should our movie-going standard be?

I do not watch movies any more. It seems like such a waste of time.

Watching movies seems like such a boring thing to do.

I am not sure one can lay down an objective standard for exactly what is acceptable and what is not.

Perhaps if we try to cultivate true spirituality, we will not feel the need to watch movies.

God Bless

I'm not confident that we can draw an impenetrable "line in the sand" for acceptable movie ratings. Philippians 4:8-9 is the guiding force here. For example, while it would be inappropriate for me to go rent the latest edition of "American Pie" (R-rating for sex/nudity), I argue quite forcefully that "Saving Private Ryan" (R-rating for violence and language) is an excellent film for Christians to see. This is an area that calls for patient, graceful discernment.

Just my thoughts. I hope that you are continuing to enjoy the beginning of your ministry in SC, Charlie. The Y is evil and chaotic, and the big boss assigned me last year's Studebakers. Pray for me, Charlie. Pray for me.

Matthew,

I've found myself watching fewer and fewer movies myself.

I agree that American Pie probably has little, if any, redeemable value. However, SPR is an excellent film and has its 'R' rating primarily for real life violence. I also think it is good for people to experience what a war is like (without having to be in one). Most young people seem to idolize and glorify the idea of war when in actuallity, war is atrocious.

About the 'Y,' sorry. The Studebakers will drive you crazy but at least they have the ability to reinforce the doctrine of sin.

I watched American Pie with a group of young Christians.

They were all cheering at the sex and rudeness.

At the time I did wonder if there viewing the film was a bit questionable.

Every Blessing in Christ
